As we start to recap the news, we kick it off with the latest news from Sonos. After last adding alarms back to the app in their most recent update, they now have a new commitment to quality.

Their CEO laid out a multi-point promise that they will abide by to ensure the highest level of quality for their products going forward. This includes a new quality ombudsperson, regular reports, and internal checks.

The biggest downside is that the EufyCam S3 Pro is very expensive, especially when you bundle it with a HomeBase 3 to get local storage, and that resolution drops to 1080p with HomeKit.

Eufy Security just launched a new security camera as a successor to the EufyCam S330, and it is a monumental upgrade to the best security cameras I’ve tested. The new EufyCam S3 Pro has one huge advantage over other high-end security cameras: Eufy’s MaxColor Vision.

Rather than being the name of a 1980s TV channel, MaxColor Vision captures detailed images, even at night. This technology produces night vision footage that looks like daytime, with stunning clarity.

The EufyCam S3 Pro also has a pair of spotlights in case you need extra light to capture more detail in low-light conditions. These spotlights weren’t always necessary but could be helpful in certain situations.

As soon as I set up my new EufyCam S3 Pro, I installed them in place of my older S330 solar-powered cameras, which will now get a new home surveilling the sides of my house. The difference in the footage was immediately glaring. The new EufyCam S3 performs stunningly during the night, even in my backyard, which has zero lights on overnight. The EufyCam offers striking color images with night vision using artificial intelligence (AI) that enhances and sharpens image quality by processing the image.

Hardware also plays a key role – aside from being a 4K-resolution camera, the EufyCam S3 Pro features an aperture of f/1.0 and a 1/1.8" sensor for increased light sensitivity. This was taken at 9:41 pm when it was pitch dark and cloudy.

Setting the technology up with HomeKit was a bit disconcerting. The image quality drops to 1080p in HomeKit, which can be a letdown if you’ve paid for a 4K device. Because you’re using Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video (HSV), the footage is stored on your iCloud, not the HomeBase 3. This setup requires an iCloud subscription, which ranges from $1 to $10 monthly for plans from 50GB to 2TB. Apple’s HSV features end-to-end encryption, staying true to Apple’s commitment to user privacy.

After trying the camera with HomeKit, I kept the device with the rest of our Eufy security cameras and alarm system in the HomeBase 3 hub with an external HDD. This keeps footage local, as the cameras connect to the HomeBase, and all the video is stored on the hub.

The EufyCam S3 Pro has a large solar panel on the top, which Eufy has improved since the EufyCam S330. The technology, called SolarPlus 2.0, offers up to 365 days of battery life through the 13,000mAh battery. The company claims just one hour a day of direct sunlight can keep it running without you having to intervene to charge it.

My older S330 security cameras, which feature SolarPlus 1.0, were installed on my north-facing driveway and south-facing backyard. While I have to charge the driveway camera every six months or so, I never have to charge the backyard camera since it gets direct sunlight.

As a result, I recommend installing these cameras where they can get at least one hour of sunlight a day year-round, though it can be under partial shade, as just 2,500lx initiates charging. If you can’t get this sunlight, you’ll need to take the cameras down to charge them at home.

Like other cameras, the EufyCam S3 Pro features two-way talk, customizable motion detection zones, weather resistance, and face, human, pet, and vehicle detection. Facial recognition is one of my favorite features of the HomeBase 3. When the cameras capture footage, the Eufy Security app can tell you which people were seen, let you add them as people you know, and give them names. Once you’ve named a family member, your notifications will say who was seen when the camera captures them again.

The EufyCam S3 Pro is not prone to false alerts. Its alerts are accurate when motion is detected, but it can see so well that I’ve had to remove the street about 200 feet away from its motion detection zone, so it doesn’t send an alert with every car that passes by.

The new EufyCam S3 Pro captures impressive footage, no matter the light conditions. I’d recommend the device to anyone looking for a security camera for dark areas, especially when you need a lot of detail, like by a side door or your driveway.

Aside from extraordinary night vision capabilities, the bundled EufyCam S3 Pro 2-pack and HomeBase 3 package, though expensive, is good enough to function as a full security system. The HomeBase 3 sounds a siren when the system is armed and movement is detected and works as a hub for all Eufy Security devices. The capabilities of the hub also mean you can store your videos locally and never have to worry about monthly fees for cloud storage.

Tapo TC73: Price and Availability

Tapo’s TC73 is widely available online and in brick-and-mortar stores. Right now, it can be purchased for $50 at places like Best Buy or Amazon.com. It was at its highest price in January 2024, at $70, but it seems to have price dips every couple of months or so, bringing it back to the $50 price point. Its pricing aligns with one of our other favorite pan-and-tilt indoor security cameras, Aqara’s E1. The TC73 comes in only one color, white and black, with a red stripe toward the bottom.

Tapo TC73: Specs and Features

The Tapo TC73 is one of the best cameras reviewed lately. The 2K QHD 4MP video is bright, with true colors and plenty of detail in darkness and daylight. It features HDR, which increases dynamic range and enhances image quality in shadows and highlights. If 2688x1520 (2K QHD) is too much for your available video bandwidth, you can scale the video down to 720P, saving space on the optional microSD card used for local storage. You can also switch video frame rates, choosing from 15fps, 20fps, 25fps, and 30fps.

The camera has more options than many of its competitors when it comes to motion and sound settings. You get the usual unspecified motion, then specific person/pet/vehicle options, plus “Line-Crossing Detection” and “Camera Tampering.” The former allows you to set a boundary in a location and get notified anytime a person or object crosses it. The latter sends you a notification when someone attempts to obstruct the camera and includes sensitivity settings. You can also set the built-in alarm to go off when obstruction or tampering is identified.

The camera features a starlight sensor, providing better night visibility. It comes with two IR lights to illuminate further: red and blue. The red light allows you to see up to 30 feet in the dark, but is visible at night, while the blue light is practically imperceptible.

There’s native HKSV support built in, so you can add it to Apple Home after configuration in the Tapo app. That means lower resolution video, and most features are unavailable in Apple’s app, including the built-in alarm. The motion sensor is exposed in Apple Home, allowing automation configuration.

Tapo TC73: Build and Looks

The camera unit is almost 5 inches tall by 3 inches wide, making it slightly larger than some other models. The unit can be mounted upside down, with an inversion option in the Tapo App 3.0 menu. It is powered by a 12V DC adapter and connects to your network via 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only.

Tapo TC73: Ease of Use

Setting up the TC73 version two was simple. Download the Tapo app, create a login, tap the “+,” look for your device, and follow the prompts. The app’s camera settings are intuitively laid out. You can access all of the camera’s settings from two screens: the main home screen for the TC73 and through the settings cog on that home screen. Features include pan and tilt function, privacy mode, alarm on/off, screenshotting, video recording, two-way communications, and playback and download of events.

Tapo TC73: Competition

Currently, the HKSV options include Aqara’s E1, Camera Hub G3, Eufy’s Indoor Cam E220, and Netatmo’s Smart Indoor Camera. Aqara’s E1 and Eufy’s E220 fall in line price-wise with the TC73, while Netatmo’s offering is $190 and the Hub G3 is $88. Of the several cameras reviewed, Tapo’s has the best-looking video so far.

The newest security camera from Eufy — Anker’s smart home company — can see clearly in the dark, uses radar motion sensing for fewer false alerts, and records 24/7 when wired. As with other Eufy cams, the new S3 Pro has free facial recognition, package, vehicle, and pet detection, and locally stored recorded video with no monthly fees. Unlike most other Eufy cameras, the S3 Pro will work with Apple Home and is compatible with Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video service.

The EufyCam S3 Pro launches this week as a two-camera bundle with one HomeBase S380 for $549.99. The HomeBase 3 enables smart alerts and local storage (16GB onboard storage, expandable up to 16TB). It also connects the S3 Pro to Apple Home, making it the first Eufy camera to work with Apple’s smart home platform since the EufyCam 2 series from 2019. The S3 Pro comes in a two-camera bundle with the HomeBase S380 (HomeBase 3). The camera can also be purchased separately.

Eufy spokesperson Brett White confirmed to The Verge that the S3 Pro will be compatible with HomeKit Secure Video, Apple’s end-to-end encrypted video storage service. “The plan is for all future devices to have Apple Home compatibility, and we’re looking into grandfathering older devices, too,” said White.

The S3 Pro has a new color night vision feature called MaxColor Vision that promises “daylike footage even in pitch-dark conditions, without the need for a spotlight.” I saw a demo of this technology at the IFA tech show in Berlin this month, and it was impressive. A camera was positioned inside a completely dark room, sending video to a monitor outside, on which I could see everything in the room as if it were daytime. Eufy says a 1/1.8-inch CMOS sensor, F1.0 aperture, and AI-powered image signal processor power the tech.

While the color night vision doesn’t use a spotlight, the S3 Pro does include a motion-activated spotlight that Eufy says can adapt based on real-time lighting to give you the best image. The light can also be manually adjusted using the app while viewing a livestream.

New dual motion detection uses radar sensing technology combined with passive infrared (PIR) technology. This should identify people more accurately and not send alerts that there’s a person in the yard when it’s a tree blowing in the wind. Eufy says it reduces false alerts by up to 99 percent.

The S3 Pro is battery-powered with a 13,000mAh battery that provides up to a quoted 365 days of power. A built-in solar panel can power the camera power for longer. In my testing of the EufyCam S3, which also has a built-in solar panel, I’ve not had to recharge it in over a year. The S3 Pro’s solar panel is 50 percent larger than the S3’s, and Eufy claims it can keep the camera fully charged with just an hour of sunlight a day. Eufy also includes an external solar panel with the camera, so you can install the camera under an eave and still get power.

Eufy says the S3 Pro records up to 4K resolution and is powered by a USB-C cable. When wired, it can record 24/7 — the first consumer-level battery-powered camera from Eufy with this capability.

The monthly cost of a cloud subscription for using a single Arlo security camera on the cheapest plan is increasing to $7.99 per month. That’s up from $4.99, and up from the $2.99 price charged in 2022.

In more “things are just getting expensive” news, the Arlo Secure subscription service is climbing. Again. This time, it’s going from $4.99 to $7.99 for a single camera or video doorbell. This 60 percent price hike comes on the heels of an increase early last year from $2.99 to $4.99. The updated plans are now live on Arlo’s site, and the lowest-tier Arlo Secure plan, which includes 30 days of cloud storage and smart alerts for people, pets, packages, and vehicles, costs $7.99 monthly for one camera.

One way around this is to use an Arlo Smart Hub, which starts at $99 and can record video for some Arlo cameras locally. Unfortunately, you lose smart alerts for people, pets, packages, and vehicles, the ability to add activity zones to the camera, and other software features accessible in the Arlo app.

This is all part of the broader problem of not owning our own stuff. When we rely on cloud services for products to work, we can either find ourselves being held hostage to these types of excessive price increases, or even find our devices completely bricked when a company goes bust or ceases support. In what seems like a good year for both Matter and Apple Home at CES, the latest device to add to the bevy of announcements is from TP-Link, whose New Tapo DL130 Smart Video Lock offers a lot to like. That’s because it’s not just a smart lock, as the name implies, but a video doorbell too!

The DL130 claims to offer up to seven different unlocking methods on the device; a built-in fingerprint sensor, keypad for passcodes, via an app (the Tapo app or Apple Home), RFID, which is similar to NFC, a physical key, using a voice assistant, or best of all perhaps, Apple HomeKey. That actually totals eight methods, but we’re guessing RFID and HomeKey are lumped together in this case.

As you can see, this works not only with Apple Home, but Amazon Alexa, and Google Home. SmartThings isn’t mentioned here, but assuming there’s a Matter update on the horizon, then this would allow it to work with that platform automatically. Aside from the lock portion of the DL30, we have a video doorbell, that features a 2K, 5MP camera to capture video when someone approaches your home, or rings the built in doorbell button. This camera also offers a 180º Field of view, although it does display footage in landscape, so it’s possible you’ll miss Apple’s Package detection feature built into HomeKit Secure Video, presuming the video doorbell is both exposed to HomeKit and works with HomeKit Secure Video to begin with.

As regards connectivity, there’s no mention as to whether this uses WiFi, but given it’s a video doorbell as well, it would have to use WiFi due to the bandwidth required for video. The non-HomeKit version of this lock also use WiFi, which makes total sense.

The lock is not available for sale, with the website merely stating ‘Coming Soon’, but if you’re in the market for a device that does two jobs in one, this might be the product for you.

With CES 2024 now thoroughly underway, there are plenty of announcements to take in, including one that just saw a very interesting new smart lock unveiled. Smart locks are everywhere these days but there’s no denying that they’re still pretty cool. They add a hint of smarts to any home without too much complication and can be a real boon for people who forget their keys. This new smart lock, the Lockly Visage, has all of the usual bells and whistles as well as one that you might not have come across before. Because while you can indeed tie the new lock into HomeKit and control it via the Home app, that’s far from the only way to open your door. Add in a touchpad and RFID support and you’re starting to get the picture. But the real fun comes when you remember that this thing also supports facial recognition.

That’s right. You can use your face to unlock your door now.

Lockly announced its new product via a press release that takes some reading if only because of the sheer number of ways the Visage can be unlocked. You can use RFID cards if you like, while you can also use your fingerprint if that’s more you kind of style. On top of that there’s support for HomeKit so you can use the Home app and then you can of course also use Siri if you want to roll that way.

But the real story is the facial recognition, right? Being able to unlock your door with your face sounds amazing, although we’re yet to see how well that works.

The lock itself supports Matter, although certification is pending, which is where the Home support comes from. And you can add Home support to your older Lockly apps via an additional $30 hub if you’d rather not replace the whole thing, too.

As for the lock itself, that’ll cost $349 when it goes on sale this summer with both Satin Nickel and Matte Black colorways offered.

Upgrading to an iCloud subscription is good for backups, media syncing, and to fully utilize other Apple apps and services like Notes. iCloud+ offers additional benefits like iCloud Private Relay, Hide My Email, HomeKit Secure Video, and a custom email domain. While iCloud works well with Apple devices, it may not be the best option for Windows or Android users who may prefer alternatives like Google Drive or Dropbox.

Apple provides 5GB of iCloud storage for free when you buy an iPhone or similar device, but it won’t last long. From there, you can get 50GB, 200GB, or 2TB of storage for $0.99, $2.99, and $9.99 per month respectively. If you need lots of storage space, Apple has added 6TB and 12TB plans for $29.99 and $59.99 per month.

The obvious benefit of iCloud storage is the amount of data you can store in the cloud. It allows you to keep media, device backups, files and documents, and just about anything else safe via third-party app integrations. Moreover, buying any amount of iCloud storage comes with an iCloud+ subscription, which includes iCloud Private Relay, Hide My Email, HomeKit Secure Video, and a custom email domain.

iCloud+ is worth paying for because of device backups. You can automatically maintain and store backups of your iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch in the cloud simply by connecting your device to a charger while it’s in sleep mode. These incremental backups are fast since they only register changes made to your device between backups.

Another reason to pay for iCloud+ is to store media in iCloud Photo Library. Keep all of your photos and videos in the cloud, sync them to your devices, and access them from anywhere. iCloud Photo Library can also help save space on your local devices by moving your full-sized master copies to the cloud.

After upgrading your iCloud storage, you can use it however you like. It works on any Apple device as long as you have an internet connection. You can turn on features like Desktop and Documents sync on a Mac to keep your Mac folders in the cloud. iCloud storage is useful for other core apps too, such as Messages, Notes, and iCloud Mail. It can also function as a general cloud storage service, similar to Google Drive or OneDrive.

However, the more you use iCloud, the more you depend on it and the more likely you will run out of space at your current storage tier. It’s easy to cut down on the amount of files in your Documents and Desktop folders, but harder to cull your personal media libraries or delete important files in Notes and old conversations from Messages. Apple’s limited selection of storage options and expensive 6TB and 12TB tiers may also be a drawback. Additionally, iCloud integration is not as seamless on Windows or Android devices.

If you don’t want to pay for iCloud, you do have other options like Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive. These services lack the deep integration with Apple hardware that iCloud has, but they may be more versatile, especially for Android and Windows users.

In conclusion, if you’re heavily entrenched in the Apple ecosystem, iCloud is worth it for backups, media syncing, and app integration. However, if you use a mixed approach to technology or prefer non-Apple devices, you may need to explore other cloud storage solutions.

One of the biggest downsides with the Ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera is that there’s no free access to recorded video. You’ll need a Standard subscription, which is $5 per month or $50 per year, to access a 30-day video history, package detection, and rich push notifications for a single camera. You can upgrade to a Complete subscription for $10 per month or $90 per year; that brings video history, package detection, and rich push notifications for unlimited cameras and 24/7 professional monitoring. Without a subscription, you can still talk to people at the door, receive notifications when a person or motion is detected, and see photo snapshots of motion or person events. In the modern smart home landscape, being able to view the recorded video without needing a subscription is a tough thing to find. My doorbell is under a covered porch and in the shade for most of the day, but I could see details in the bright light in my yard and further without any issues. A standout feature is the 175-degree vertical field of view. That lets me see the entire porch, including deliveries left on the walkway. Other video doorbells offer a similar field of view but suffer from a strong fisheye effect. Ecobee’s video looks great and doesn’t suffer from those same issues. When dark, the night vision feature works well and shows substantial detail, which is always helpful to discern faces and more on your porch. There are additional ways to cut down on unwanted notifications, like from a blowing tree branch. You can set an Activity Zone where activity will be detected. The companion app also allows you to customize the detection range of the radar in the doorbell camera. There are four ranges to select from—7 feet, 10 feet, 20 feet, and 30 feet. Smart Focus is also another great feature. Even though it’s turned off by default and currently listed as Beta in the app, it can pan and zoom to keep motion, people, and packages in view. When active, it will start zooming in when, for example, a delivery person is walking up to your door with a package. The feature worked well enough, but since the video itself is 1080p, the zoomed-in results weren’t particularly impressive. But it might be something you’d want to use if you have a longer porch area. I was pleased with the overall video experience, with one substantial caveat. Even though the Ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera is compatible with both 2.4 and 5GHz Wi-Fi, there was a sometimes long delay in bringing up a live view in either the Apple Home or Ecobee app. I occasionally waited up to 10 seconds to bring up a live view. My first thought was an issue with my mesh Wi-Fi, but with a bit of digging, I found the doorbell camera connected fine to the 5GHz wireless. And I had an eero node a little more than 20 feet away in my living room. Oddly, when the doorbell was pressed, or I received a motion or package notification, the video was accessible immediately. Likely, that’s because the doorbell camera was awake and prepared to send live video.

Using a thermostat as a dedicated smart video screen for a thermostat doesn’t sound like a natural combination, but it works extremely well. My other family members aren’t usually tied to smart home devices, and everyone has enjoyed being able to see the live view themselves instead of having to ask me who’s at the door.

The Complete plan also provides 24/7 professional monitoring. That’s a spectacular deal for that service, especially compared to other competitors’ options. I’ve been trying out a bundle that included the thermostat and two smart sensors along with the video doorbell. The real advantage of the system is its simplicity. It’s great for everyone in the home to be able to arm and disarm the system directly on the thermostat keypad right along with the app. It’s obviously not going to replace a full-fledged option, being able to take advantage of professional monitoring for $10 a month is great and provides peace of mind for almost anyone.

It’s hard to overstate how effective and useful a HomeKit door lock is. From being able to unlock and lock remotely to automatically unlocking as you walk up, it’s a great gift idea for anyone looking to upgrade their smart home. My top door lock at the moment of the Level Lock+. With Home Key support, an appearance that blends in with any decor, and the option to continue using a traditional key, it’s hard to beat. I also love the NFC keys as well. They’re perfect to give to family members who are less technical.

If you want something with a PIN code for entry, check out the Aqara U100. It also includes a fingerprint option as well. Both are fantastic options. I also love the 4th generation August Smart Lock. Although it lacks Home Key support, it does allow you to keep the outside part of your door lock the same as you have now and simply replace the inside. For many people, replacing the outside part of the lock is a non-starter, so it lets you add HomeKit support to your existing one by just replacing the inside part.

Top HomeKit cameras

HomeKit cameras are an awesome gift because you always need “just one more.” Just because a camera supports HomeKit doesn’t mean it supports HomeKit Secure Video (HKSV), though. Every camera that supports HKSV supports HomeKit for automation, though. For interior cameras, I love Eve’s indoor HomeKit camera. It supports (and only supports) HomeKit Secure Video, so there is no “Eve cloud” that also has your footage. You’ll need a Home hub like an Apple TV 4K or HomePod mini to process the footage, but most Apple fans already have them. One of the things I love about this camera is the magnetic base, as it makes for flexible installation options.

For outdoor HomeKit cameras, there are some great options as well. For a flood light replacement, check out Eve’s Outdoor Camera. Because it replaces a floodlight, it will have permanent power while using Wi-Fi for the transmission. Similar to the indoor camera, it works great with HomeKit Secure Video. For a wired outdoor HomeKit camera, check out Logitech Circle View. If you’re looking for a battery-powered outdoor option with local recording, check out the Eufy 2C cameras. The battery life is great (180 days), all the recording goes to an SD record at the base station, and you can add it to HomeKit for automation access as well as viewing on Apple TV, etc.

One of the things I failed to mention is the benefits of HomeKit cameras in your automation. Because the cameras act as motion sensors, they can be used within your automations to turn on other accessories (lights, etc) when they detect motion.

Back in September, an iPhone user reported a security issue that could render an iPhone unusable with nothing but a Flipper Zero multitool and some creativity. Now, months later, Apple has still not addressed this issue in any fashion, sparking concerns. Essentially, someone with the technical know-how could use the Flipper Zero to ping the AirPods Bluetooth connect symbol on the screen consistently to lock down a device. As 9to5Mac has pointed out, the iOS 17.2 beta does nothing to rectify this.

As of right now, the device needs to be quite close to the iPhone, and turning off Bluetooth entirely can stop it but this flaw could be exploited by users who know how to do worse. To protect yourself fully, you must turn off Bluetooth from settings – doing so from the Control Center doesn’t work.

The Flipper Zero is not the only device capable of spoofing a Bluetooth notification, so it’s a problem Apple will have to fix internally to eliminate the threat for good. Perhaps a solution such as disabling Bluetooth after a handful of pings in a row or only allowing trusted devices to ping multiple times could be a software-based fix in a future version of iOS.

Apple didn’t respond to a request for comment when the issue was first raised in September.

The actual value of these plans will vary considerably, but shockingly Verizon seems to have one of the best options we’ve seen to date as it now offers Unlimited Cloud storage to individuals for just $14 a month.

Simply put, Verizon Cloud Storage is an optional cloud backup service for Verizon users. While it’s aimed at backing up your Android phone or iPhone, it can also be used to back up files on computers and tablets as well. There are several existing Verizon Cloud plans including a $5.99 plan for 600GB or an Unlimited Group plan for $19.99 a month that lets you share with up to four others, including non-Verizon users. But now Verizon is also adding an Unlimited Individual plan for $13.99 a month.

Carriers like Verizon love to toss around the word unlimited when talking about data, and yet there are often caveats involved like slow-downs after using a certain amount of data. What about Unlimited Cloud storage, what kind of restrictions does Verizon have in place? Well as it turns out this is a truly unlimited plan but there are still a few small catches. First, you can only upload 50GB of data per day and individual files or videos can’t be more than 10GB in size. If you upload more than 500GB in a month, your daily upload limit will be reduced to just 10GB for the rest of the month. Thankfully that’s it, there is no firm limit to how much space you can take in total — just how much you back up at a time. Honestly, these are all very reasonable limits to prevent server congestion, and aren’t too different from the restrictions offered by many of its competitors that don’t have unlimited data.

The biggest catch to Verizon Cloud Unlimited storage is that you have to be a Verizon member, but if you are, it’s a pretty solid value. Looking at the chart above, for that same $14 a month an individual could get around 2TB on average from most of the competition, though all these plans include family sharing except Dropbox, which requires a business account to share with other users. Nonetheless, you could store hundreds of TBs of data with Verizon for the same $14 a month and you can have up to four other users if you’re willing to pay just $20 for the Family version of Verizon Cloud storage. To store even close to that amount on iCloud you’d be paying $64.99 for 12TB, though Google is much more reasonable at $15 for 30TB. Of course, we have to point out that Microsoft OneDrive includes access to Microsoft 365 which adds a lot of additional value and makes it one of the easiest cloud storage services to recommend if you need Office, Excel, and other Microsoft productivity tools.

At the end of the day, yes, Verizon Unlimited Storage is worth the asking price for both its individual and family tiers. Just be aware carriers tend to be less consistent with plans and promotions, so there are no guarantees its current “unlimited” model will be available forever. As someone who has used Verizon’s Cloud solutions in the past, I can also say the user interface won’t be as good as some of the dedicated alternatives mentioned above. Even so, there’s so much value here that it’s almost a no-brainer for existing subscribers even if it might not be quite as user friendly. Really the only reason not to get it is if you don’t have Verizon or you need specific tools provided by Microsoft 365. The same would apply if you appreciate additions like the VPN on Google One and can’t live without them. If you don’t have Verizon already, is this enough to switch? Obviously not, but I want to point out that Verizon’s plans and general strategy recently have shifted a bit. It’s no longer the most expensive postpaid option out there (that honor goes to AT&T). If you are considering a switch to another carrier, this could help sweeten Verizon’s chances of being a good fit for you.

Today I learned that the average American subscribes to four streaming video subscription services. That makes me an above-average American, with a grand total of seven streaming services. To complicate matters further, I am an American living in Australia, and the movies and shows I can access change drastically depending on what side of the Pacific Ocean I’m on. This is routinely frustrating, but as I’ve traveled across continents, I’ve developed a few ways to watch my shows no matter where I am. If you love to travel but don’t love missing out on your favorite content, make use of these tips.

Get a VPN, Which You Should Already Have Anyway

Most streaming services restrict their content according to location, which means that a show or movie you can watch in one country may not be available in another. Virtual private networks, or VPNs, are a great way to mask where you are when you’re navigating your favorite websites. We’ve shared before about how vital they are for security, and we also recommended some great ones that you can check out.

But VPNs aren’t just ideal for privacy; they help you explore streaming platforms without the sites knowing where you’re located. In many cases, you can specify which country you want to appear to be coming from, so if a show you like is available only to American audiences, for example, you can use your VPN to convince the streaming service that you’re in the US. This unlocks a huge variety of shows and movies that are location-locked and inaccessible on a non-VPN connection.

Also, be warned: Depending on the circumstances, the content you’re watching may not be of the highest quality. There might be video or sound issues, or the show itself might be incomplete. But if you are desperate to find a show that just doesn’t exist elsewhere, there’s no reason not to check YouTube. You might get lucky. Oh, and if you’re a YouTube Premium subscriber, you can even download some videos for viewing while you travel. Same with a few other streaming services, like Netflix.
